Being manual transmission, yea, sounds like the car ran into some deep water at some point.
Think of the output shaft seal as a ring around the driveshaft coming in. It's good to replace if you're up in there messing with the transmission and it's never been replaced.
What you need is a tailshaft plug. This will prevent any fluid from escaping while you're dropping the transmission and putting it at weird angles.
